Iraq: We Started Something

Iraq :We started something

Since the beginning of time, there has been dissension in the middle east. For thousands of years, the people in that part of the world have been fighting. it’s almost like it’s their job, get up in the morning, have a cup of coffee and go fight.

This time however, it may be different, because of the Internet and various other forms of communication, it is nearly impossible for a dictatorship to keep it’s subjects in the dark as far as what is happening in the rest of the world. In times past people like Saddam Hussein were able to control the information that not only flowed into the country. but out of it as well. This was no more evident than when the United States United States and it’s allies attacked Iraq, it was then we learned that over the years CNN was only telling us what Saddam wanted us to know. I think this was a grave injustice on the part of CNN. Because of this their credibility suffered and will never be the same.

Even though no WMDs were found, Saddam was an evil man who punished his people relentlessly. There were terrorist training camps discovered in Iraq, facilities to make WMDs and also he had used them on his people in the past.. Where they went , no one knows or they aren’t telling. The world is better off without him.

As the attacks continued, the whole world was kept up to date of what was happening, many in the  third world countries  for the first time, began to realize they could have a different way of life way of life. Viewing images from other countries, they began to get a small taste of what freedom would be like. Slowly they began to dream of a life they could have without a tyrannical dictator telling them every move they could make. No doubt things probably would not have come down as they did in Egypt without such sources as Face Book and others. Now other countries such as Tunisia and Libia have joined in. The middle east will never be the same. Once a soul tastes freedom freedom, there is no going back.

Although the fight is far from over, seeing the people in Iraq struggle gave the rest of the middle east a hope that they could one day be free also. Now ,although the final outcome is uncertain, there can be no doubt that eventually the middle east will be bathed in democracy. No longer can governments hide the truth.

What’s Wrong with This Country?

Tuesday’s  Daily paper, ran two articles on the front page side by side :

1- Calif’s 20 Billion Dollar Budget Deficit

2- The Calif Supreme Court ruling that ILLEGALS can attend college and get benefits

Why don’t they just deport them when they arrive to register !   ?

3- Last year they ran an article on the yearly costs to Calif Tax payers from Illegals
using Hospital Emergency Rooms for their general health care –

At just one hospital the cost to tax payers totaled over 25  million a year

Someone please tell me what the HELL’s wrong with
all the people that run this country !!!!!!

We’re “broke” & can’t help our own Seniors, Veterans, Orphans, Homeless etc.,???????????

In the last months we have provided aid to Haiti , Chile , and Turkey . And now Pakistan …..home of bin Laden.  Literally, BILLIONS of DOLLARS!!!

Our retired seniors living on a ‘fixed income’ receive no aid nor do they get any breaks while our government and religious organizations pour
Hundreds of Billions of $$$$$$’s and Tons of Food to Foreign Countries!

We have hundreds of adoptable children who are shoved aside to make room for the adoption of foreign orphans.
AMERICA: a country where we have homeless without shelter,  children going to bed hungry, elderly going without ‘needed’ meds, and mentally ill without treatment -etc,etc.

They have a ‘Benefit’   for the people of Haiti on 12 TV stations, ships and planes lining up with food, water, tents clothes, bedding, doctors and medical supplies.

Imagine if the *GOVERNMENT* gave ‘US’ the same support they give to other countries.

Sad isn’t it?

Labor Unions: A Love /Hate Relationship

Are Unions Necessary?

In the United States, there has always been a love /hate relationship with labor unions. There is no doubt many people who owe a debt of gratitude to the unions because of the elevated standard of living that has been afforded to the common working man.
In their day, the unions were needed, and answered a need for reform in our factories and places of business. To this day there is still a need for the working person to have some one to air his grievances and represent him in not only matters of employment and benefits, but also in Washington as well. To be represented in the workplace without a union would be next to impossible.

However, having said that, due to the recent financial  problems being encountered, not only in business, but particularly in public sector jobs, it has become evident that maybe the unions have grown too powerful and in many cases, don’t have the best interests of not only their members, but the country at heart.

Just like many businesses and corporations, they have lost touch with what is important,  when the president of the teachers union makes a statement saying he will be interested in the best interest of the children only when they become union members, something is wrong.

We all appreciate our firemen and policemen, and the job they do, and most of them are valuable to our welfare and safety. However, there are many who retire at an early age with pensions approaching $100,000 a year. They are and should be respected, however, does that give them the right to a key to the national treasury? When the best paying jobs of a country are in the public sector, it can only spell trouble. A society simply can not sustain that sort of economy.

I myself am the beneficiary of a union pension. I am extremely grateful for the benefits I enjoy from being a member of a strong union. However, I am also grateful that my union didn’t carry it to extreme and they remembered who they were working for. As a result, the company I worked for, is still one of the strongest financially and well respected companies in the world.

The employees are well paid, and the benefits are some of the best available, however, the union recognized early on that it would take hard work from the employees to create a financial base so the company could honor their commitments in the long term.
Both the company and the union knew how far they could push and still maintain a healthy and productive work environment. Maybe that is what is needed more than any thing.

Self Esteem, Feeling Valued

Like attracts Like

We all, at different times have a challenge with feelings of inadequacy. It is only human to at times feel as though the whole world is picking on us and that what we say or do has no meaning or value. These feelings are only a natural part of life. Often times they are  brought on in times of extreme stress or periods of self doubt. After self exploration and an inner search for the God within, the feelings disappear and we return to our normal state of mind in which we realize that our thoughts and actions are important in the general scheme of things.

Feeling valued is very important, if every one felt their life had value and meant something, violence, crime and all the other negative aspects of life on earth would be practically non-existent. Feeling valued as an individual is all about the person who feels neglected rather than any one else. You can’t blame these feelings on some one else. As with all other situations in life , we attract to us the people and events that solidify our own thoughts and feelings. When feeling thoughts of inadequacy, we only attract what will reinforce those feelings. We become a giant magnet that draws from the universe every thing that will give us what we want.

It is an unwritten law of the universe, “Like attracts Like”. While there is some truth in the axiom “Opposites attract”, the main force in life besides love is the attraction of like . Even love is influenced by this, You cannot love someone or something if on some level you don’t like them or it.

if there is one thing I’ve become aware of in this life is that thoughts create reality, and even though I believe some events in life are predestined, it is our thoughts in life that create our reality.  Even our so called pre-destiny has a root in our preexistence when certain thoughts were entertained and these thoughts in turn created our future life.

Even the events we may have agreed to in our preexistence  were created for a reason and often times the so called negative aspects of our life turn out to be some of the best experiences we could ever imagine.Just like the opening phrase in the bible, ” In the beginning was the word, and the word was God” so the thoughts and words we utter create our individual world as we know it. Make the best of life and learn from it.

Medicare and Social Security, An Entitlement?

It isn’t an entitlement

People , especially those in the main stream media and those in the government keep referring to social security as an entitlement. To me an entitlement is something given to us free and something that is automatically ours, no matter what.

Under this definition neither social security nor medicare is an entitlement. Any one who has worked for a living has paid into social security all during their working years, and they have paid heavily. During just the last 10 years of my working life , between my employer and my self we paid in almost $200 a week. That is a lot of money. Contrary to popular belief, the government isn’t giving us money, it is our money which we have given them for safe keeping. How is that going for us?

Although I am grateful to be getting social security, any private investment program with a conservative yield would have paid me a  lot more than I am now getting from social security. If I could have or would have paid into a program all my life, starting when I was 20 only $20 a week with an average interest rate of 7%, it would now be paying me about the same amount of money I am receiving  from social security, and this income would be from just  interest. The plan would never run out of money.

Despite what the left wing politicians try to tell you, the stock market , even with it’s ups and downs, has averaged ten percent growth  since the depression. Fortunately,I was able to invest about two thirds of the amount invested in social security over the years into a private pension fund. Even though the investment was less, I was able to start drawing from the fund 16 years sooner, it pays considerably more, and unless the economy totally tanks, the fund will never run out of money. Even if someday the payments are reduced, the payout will still be greater than the government program.

I know that when I started giving money to social security in 1962, twenty dollars a a week would have been half my paycheck and would have been unsustainable, however that deficit could have easily been made up in later years. If I had contributed into a private fund the money that was given to the government, my retirement income would be many times higher than what social security compensation is, plus there would no doubt be enough in the fund to provide me the best health care in the world. There would  be money left over at the end of my life for my heirs to distribute as they please.

The only answer to this mess that has been created by our narrow minded congress is to educate people so they have the knowledge to manage their own money and retirement. I know there will always be people who need assistance, but that is OK, nothing wrong with temporarily helping someone who needs it. However the private sector does a lot better job of this than the government ever could hope to do.

Because of the mess that has been created , the only logical way out is to honor the present recipients who have grown dependent on social security and gradually wean the younger generation to a better system where they can benefit and get the full value from the money invested.

Valley Forge The Transformation

Valley Forge: The Transformation

Probably no place in history transformed our young Continental Army more than Valley Forge. No battle or major conflict was ever fought here, however from December 19th, 1777 until June 19th 1778, our young army along with it’s Commander General Washington faced a struggle with low moral, extreme winter hardship, lack of food, disease, and no pay to emerge as a fighting force intent on seeing the battle for independence through to it’s ultimate conclusion.

It led General Washington to state,”Naked and starving as they are we cannot enough admire the incomparable patience and fidelity of the soldiery.”

“Let it be told to the future world, that in the depth of winter,
when nothing but hope and virtue could survive, that the city and the
country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet and to repulse
it.” The Crisis, by Thomas Paine.

Not all survived, many deserted and some froze or starved to death. Up until this time the young army had few if any solid victories, mostly they were retreating, hoping to gain an advantage somewhere or somehow where the enemy could be defeated.Hope ran eternal, that is about all they had, only problem is , you can’t eat Hope.

Solidly beaten and weary, they set about the task of building quarters for the winter. You have all heard the saying, we have a room for you, but you’ll have to make your own bed, well, they had to make their room also. Gathering the materials to construct housing during the harsh Pennsylvania winter had to be trying to the the soul.

The ground hog must have not seen his shadow, because by February the weather improved from horrible to just plain miserable. With the coming of spring, conditions improved, food and supplies became more readily available, and the plot to remove Washington from command dissipated, France had joined our cause and the troops become better trained and combat ready.

What brought about this transformation? Why did an army that was down and out, with no logical reason as to how they could continue on, much less fight and win over a more powerful and well trained British Army. How did they  suddenly emerge into a force to be reckoned with?

They realized they were committed! The men and women who were there, (yes there were women there, providing aid and comfort to the soldiers,) they realized how much they had invested, there was no turning back. Once an individual or group of individuals totally commit to a cause,(and the cause is just) the Gods join in and it is just a matter of time until the goal in question is achieved. Sure there is still hardship and some will be injured or even killed, but if the cause is just , no one dies in vain. It is only when good men do nothing that the battle is lost.
