How To Teach Kids What They Need to Know

The things we are teaching kids in school is wrong.  Many times our children’s time is being wasted teaching them subjects that are not going to do them one iota of good in the real world.

This leads to not only uneducated adults who have no idea how to support themselves when they go into the working world, but also leads to inattentiveness and boredom in the classroom, which leads to behavior that shouldn’t be condoned and often times the child is diagnosed with ADD or some other so-called mental disorder, when the only issue they have is they are bored.

Not everyone is going to be a rocket scientist or English major. Why then are we insisting they study math for twelve years when they will never use it? Everyone should have a basic working knowledge of English if they are going to live and work in the United States, but do they really need twelve years learning how to diagram sentences?

Kids should be taught the skills they will need to earn a living, not the skills someone thinks they need. Most young people develop the skills they are going to use early in life, if they are going to be a truck driver or an accountant, these traits develop early.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to concentrate on their strengths rather than try to develop talents they don’t have?

More often than not students graduate from high school knowing how to solve a geometry problem and they don’t even know how to balance a check book. Many haven’t the slightest idea concerning anything about economics, or planning for their retirement.  As a result , far too many assume someone else is going to take care of these issues for them.

This isn’t going to happen, in the real world, no one will take care of you like you will. There are no government programs that will solve your problems for you, they only make things worse.

People need to learn how to manage their own lives. It is essential they learn how to manage money, balance careers and family life, and not assume someone else can do it better than they can.

There are far too many students that graduate from high school without the basic tools necessary to live a functioning life. They are forced to study subjects they have no interest in and not having the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to earn a living in their desired field.

We can’t all be Harvard graduates and earn a living in the financial world, the world needs plumbers, electricians and factory workers as well.

It’s time we started teaching our youth skills that they are not only interested in but will enable them to earn a living doing what they  are skilled at, and what they enjoy as well.
