There is becoming a great divide in America. More and more people are moving off the land and into large cities, many times living in small apartments or condos and very seldom if ever having to opportunity to reconnect with their agrarian roots.
As a result they are losing their connection with mother earth. In the process their whole line of thinking changes. Living in a urban environment naturally makes one more dependent on government services. In the process they give up their desire for freedom and the chance to make their own decisions concerning important choices in their life.
This is a gradual process and many times they don’t even notice or care until suddenly they become someone who could no longer survive on their own. Soon they have become slaves to the government and no longer free.
There is a big difference between relying on someone and become a slave to them. In an agrarian culture , neighbors rely on neighbors, sometimes out of necessity, but they are still independent and can fend for themselves, it’s a two way street, you help me , I help you. That makes it personal.
In an urban society, neighbors seldom know each other, they live next door for years and have never met. When someone needs help, they call a non-caring government agency who have sterile rules and regulations to go by. There is nothing personal about it, people soon begin to feel as if they are living as isolationists and have no one they can personally turn to.
Soon this turns to frustration and anger, many times it is unnoticed by even the most astute, they think it has to be this way. Their values slowly change and they slowly become more dependent on a government agency who doesn’t have anyone’s interest in mind but their own self interests.
As this slowly occurs over the years and a few generations come and go, the two groups develop different customs, beliefs and values. As the cities grow, they outnumber the people living on the land and slowly the values and ethics that made a country great disappear until many think the people living on the land are extremists and their opinions are reduced to be thought of as archaic and old fashioned.
This is how great societies die and wither away.
