George Washington Insisted on Chaplains in the Military

Art Prints

Many times in the last few years, so called experts have tried to make the point that not only General Washington, but a the founding fathers were of a secular nature and didn’t believe in God.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Most of the founding fathers not only believed in God, but many were practicing christians as well. Most were also masons, or believed in masonic principles.

General Washington himself, had a strong belief in a higher power and prayed daily or even more often. He expressed this belief many times throughout his life and demonstrated it many times, often retreating at Valley Forge and praying alone in the forest.

Anyone who has studied his actions would be quick to testify of his beliefs.

He admonished his generals whenever he heard them using profanity, and often lectured them to suppress the profanity of the soldiers fighting under them.

It was under his direction that chaplains were first introduced to the military. Before this time , the idea of an army chaplain had never been implemented. The armies of Europe never had a chaplain, and probably never had prayer or any kind of religious service.

Because of his upbringing in the Anglican church, and his strong devotion to God, he began a custom that is still in effect today.

It is because of these beliefs in a Supreme Being that our country became a country, a haven for many. It is because of this, the United States became that “Shining City on the Hill”. Only by maintaining these beliefs and customs will we remain to do  so.
