Militarizing the Local Police (Part 2)

Written by; Gary Wonning

The riots in Missouri bring back many memories of such events in the past, the riots of the 60s,from which Detroit has never recovered, The Rodney King incident, and like several others, the full story was never told.

The O.J.Simpson trial, where riots broke out in Los Angeles, which would have been a lot worse had he been convicted. Even the  Trayvon Martin incident could have gotten a lot worse in short period of time.

There have been several such events in the recent past that has brought major destruction to the property of law abiding citizens.

I don’t think anyone wants to see their cities and homes burned to the ground, these types of incidents have to be controlled very quickly. We saw what happened in Ferguson, in many cases it was more about looting and robbing than it was about someone’s civil rights, or race.

Most people, and the press jumped to conclusions. The press and certain  so called civil rights leaders actually threw gasoline on an already explosive situation, having only their own selfish agenda in mind.

Our civil rights are important and protecting the Bill of Rights is of the utmost importance.

Having said that, we don’t live in the era of Barney Fife anymore. The world has changed. There is a real imminent threat to our way of life, our liberties, and our security like never before.

Technology has made it possible for almost anyone to create a weapon of mass destruction. Because of the actions of our own federal government, we have thousands flooding across our southern border daily that threaten our security and our way of life.

I don’t want to be an alarmist, but our country probably has hundreds, if not thousands of terrorists living within our borders. They are walking amongst us , many supposedly leading so-called normal lives.

We face threats on many levels, we will be attacked again, it is just a matter of time. When we are, it will be up to the local authorities to control the situation until, and if help arrives. There may come a day when we are glad our local police forces are armed as they are.

If things get really ugly, the federal government won’t be able to handle it, it will need to be taken care of on a local level.

Our second amendment rights need to be preserved, that is a major necessity, but we may need more firepower than the citizenry can provide, plus the local police force can gather much needed information and coordinate it, something the local citizenry cannot do.

Thankfully, most law enforcement officers have their heart in the right place and are dedicated to their mission.

There are always some bad apples in the barrel. The best way to ensure we have dedicated people in our local law enforcement is to hire the best people , regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. It is time to stop hiring people to fill some quota, and fire and prosecute them if they overreach.

Like everyone else, I am concerned about the military build up of our local police forces, but I am equally concerned about the dangers facing our nation and our ability to face them. Our local police force may be our first line of defense.

America is in serious trouble, many no longer realize what values and principles our country is founded on and have strayed from the common sense and creative thinking of our ancestors, how can we fix it?

  1. Dear Gary,

Thank you for the article. It is obvious you are as concerned as I am about this Country of ours.

I am inclined to agree with you regarding the police as a first defense, I only wish they would include our concerns in their tactics. Their behavior leads me to believe they are above the law. This is a grave concern.

    Great read, and thanks again.

      • As a person, I think you are right. I think most police officers are decent people. However, as a scientist I can’t help but use your example in jest. Due to the production of the plant hormone ethylene during the ripening process it has been proven scientifically that, “One bad apple spoils the whole bunch.”(1)

Considering police rage with hormones during times of crisis, the whole thought process is terrifying!

      • May I ask your opinion regarding the government offering surplus military equipment to local police? I understand the mindset behind having this type of equipment in order to combat the potential of domestic terrorism, but do you believe it’s a good idea to bring this type of equipment to bare during times of simple civil unrest?

I think this is an important distinction. A distinction that could be important for others to comprehend.

      • Overall, I think it is a good idea. We have no idea what is coming at us, our borders are open. I don’t like it, but I think the potential for harm is greater coming from an outside source than our own government. I guess we just need to have faith that we have enough good people in government that they will eventually do the right thing. If they don’t ,it doesn’t matter either way.

      • Thanks Gary, you said what I was hoping to hear, “I don’t like it…”

I don’t like it either, and as you further stated, “… it doesn’t matter either way.”

I hope I’m not taking your statements out of context, forgive me if so. The world is a crazy place. I just hope our government maintains its commitment to its citizenry. There are a whole bunch of us Americans who care. Democrats and Republicans alike.

This is a great nation. We must learn to work together. What’s the old saying? United We Stand, Divided We Fall.

        Good day Sir.
        🙂
